The ukulele is a fun instrument to learn. Although the ukulele is very popular in the Hawaiian Islands, it is also played by many people of all ages around the world. Hawaiian songs are the most popular on the ukulele, but just about genre of music can be played with this instrument. The best thing about Hawaiian songs is that many of them require about 2-4 chords. From "Pearly Shells" to "Aloha Oe", many of the popular songs can be played with just a few chords.Learning new chords will broaden a musician's repertoire. Learning how to play the Bbm7 chord can be very easy after just a few steps and a little practice.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Sit in a comfortable position with the back straight. Rest the ukulele in the lap. Place the right arm over the body of the ukulele and hold it with the back of the ukulele touching the stomach and strings facing away from the body.
Step2
With the left hand, hold the neck of the ukulele near the "nut" or string spacer which is near the tuning keys. Let the neck of the ukulele rest between the left thumb and index finger.
Step3
Move the index finger between the string spacer and the first fret which is the first metal strip on the neck. Place the tip of the index finger on th G or top string.
Step4
Hold down the remaining C, E and A strings under the G string with the index finger. Keep the index finger between the string spacer and first fret. Check the neck of the ukulele to make sure it is not touching the left palm.
Step5
Hold down all four strings down firmly. Gently strum all of the strings near the center of the ukulele body. The strum should produce a clear uninterrupted sound. If the sound is not clear, check to see that the index finger is on the assigned strings only and not touching the fret or string spacer.

Tips & Warnings

  • The ukulele strings from top to bottom are assigned G, C, E and A.
  • For beginners, a four string ukulele would be best rather than a 6 or 8 string because it is easier to hold down fewer strings.
  • The "nut" or string spacer connects the strings from the tuning keys to the neck.
