How to Get a Job in a Nursery
There are generally no formal prerequisites to get a job in a nursery. Retail, sales and basic horticulture knowledge is pretty much all you will need to have. Nurseries just basically grow, maintain, sell and distribute plants or plant-related items to the public. To get a job in a nursery try to remember some basic steps.

Meet a potential employer in person. The best way to ensure you get a job in a nursery is to meet with an employer face to face. Get them familiar with your face and name and when you speak with them; be sure to talk about your experience, if you can. Far too many people get lazy by simply calling around town rather than putting forth the effort to go on location. If you need to, make a pretense that you are a customer or “plant-lover,” and buy a plant, if you have to.

Apply at the nursery of your choice. As with any job, you will have to fill out an application. Some stores will have hard copy applications while others will require you complete one online. To get a job in a nursery, ask which they require at your face to face meeting.

Schedule an interview. When you schedule an initial interview, know you may have to speak with additional employers or managers, as well. It is common for hiring managers to have a potential applicant talk with two or three mangers individually or possibly all in the same day. Make sure you have enough time to talk with everyone.

Do follow up with your application. It is common for applicants, after an interview, to simply wait for an employer to call them back. After interviewing someone a hiring manager will typically say “we'll call you.” Two days after the interview, take some initiative and call the nursery first. This will let the hiring manager that you are still interested and will keep you name fresh in his or her head.

Dress the part. This does not mean you should wear a suit and tie; this is especially true to get a job in a nursery. Know nursery workers, assistants and managers will formulate an opinion of you by the way you look. They will want to know you can fit in, in order to make the job environment as pleasant for potential customers, as possible.

Show up to an interview about 15 minutes ahead of time. A hiring manager will not appreciate it if you show up too early.
Many nurseries have on the job training.
It may not be necessary to bring a resume in order to get job in a nursery. Bring one anyway to let an employer know you are sincere about your desire to work there.
Employers do not like to have their time wasted. Be sure to have a plan before attending an interview and make sure you have some idea what you intend to say. Do not "wing it."
