How to Buy an Electric Violin

A violin is a gorgeous instrument, from its graceful shape all the way down to the heavenly notes it produces. Even the classic violin, however, can change with time: Nowadays, a violin can be powered not just by talent, but also by alternating current. The electric violin can be a wonderfully challenging instrument, as you join the ranks of musicians from Jean-Luc Ponty to Emilie Autumn.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Visit your local shop --a lot --and determine what sort of violin you want. Take some for a test-drive. Electric violins come in numerous shapes and sizes, from the distinctly futuristic to more traditional forms. Be careful to make no assumptions: Some manufacturers that are famous for their electric guitars may produce so-so violins.
Step2
Ask plenty of questions about brand names, sound quality, the differences between electric and acoustic, and so on. Some violin teachers may recommend that first-time players learn on an acoustic violin before moving on to the electric. Some violinists believe it's the only way to learn the subtleties of the instrument.
Step3
Know your budget. The violin itself is purchased separately from the bow, the amp, the cables and all the other accessories. A proper bow can easily cost hundreds of dollars. Resist the urge to find a cheap violin on eBay; their quality is in no way guaranteed. And, understand that you may have to upgrade to a better, more expensive violin as your skills improve.
Step4
Rent before you buy. This is one of the only ways to guarantee that you are making the right choice. Many shops will apply your rental costs toward an eventual purchase.
Step5
Wait until you get the feel of your instrument to buy a proper bow. For the first week, try out your violin with a simple, cheap bow so you can determine how the bow reacts to your instrument. And don`t forget your accessories. An electric violin can only do so much without the appropriate equipment: jacks, amps, etc.
