How to Become a Citizen of Germany
Becoming a naturalized citizen of Germany can be a time-consuming, difficult process. There are many different requirements and stipulations to meet, and the process is regulated stringently by the German government. If you follow the right procedures and are eligible, though, it is possible to become a legal citizen of Germany.

Reside in Germany for at least eight years. You must live in Germany, legally, for a minimum of eight years before your request for citizenship can be granted.

Become fluent in German. In order to become a legal citizen of Germany you will need to demonstrate that you are a fluent speaker and can read and write German effectively.

Declare allegiance. In order to become a naturalized citizen, you'll need to formally declare your allegiance to the constitution of Germany.

Attain good employment. The better your current employment in Germany, the better your chances of being accepted as a citizen.

Prove yourself desirable. Before you become a citizen of Germany, you'll have to show that you have never been convicted of any serious crimes in your previous homeland.

Reject your current citizenship. Germany rarely grants requests for dual citizenship. So, to be accepted as a citizen of Germany you'll likely need to revoke your citizenship in any other country.

Tips & Warnings
If you take an "Integration Course," offered by the German government, the residency restriction is lowered to seven years instead of eight.
If your spouse or children are eligible already, you may be able to apply early with them through a process called "derivative naturalization."
Don't apply for German citizenship unless you've already secured good employment or have good credentials and job skills.
