How to Manage Painful Heels

Painful heels can be extremely dibilitating. It can prevent you from walking and even working in severe cases. It is however quite common and can be managed. Management involves a diagnoses of the cause of the pain along with the appropriate treatment and prevention of the condition.

      Pay attention to the shoes that you are wearing and make a note of any that may actually cause your heel/s to become painful. The heel pain may simply be the heel counter catching the back of your heel bone (calacaneum) that can be easily rectified.

      Avoid any activities that cause the heel pain, such as running. Never ignore pain in your feet and do not follow advice from those that suggest that you "Run through the pain."

      Visit a podiatrist if you have heel pain that lasts for more than a few days. They will diagnose the cause of the pain so that the correct treatment can be prescribed. In some case this may require orthotic therapy whilst in others you may need to change your footwear style or carry out a stretching program presided by your podiatrist or physical therapist. Cortisone injections or anti-inflammatory drugs may also be necessary in some cases.

  • Do not ignore pain in the heels. Many conditions respond best to early treatment.
