You receive the benefit of getting in shape while having fun swing dancing!

Swing dancing can be a lot of fun, but also challenging if you have two left feet or no natural rhythm to work with. Here are a few basic swing dance moves to the Side by Side Charleston to get you on your way to dancing like a pro!

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Swing dance music
  1. Step 1

Take the proper stance. One of you will lead and the other will be right by the leader's side, with the leader's arm around the other one's waist and the follower's arm around the leader's shoulder.

  2. Step 2

You both rock back with your left feet, raising your right feet off the ground just a little. The leader should keep their arm in position around the follower's waist and the follower should keep their arm position around the leader's shoulder.

  3. Step 3

You both step down with your right feet. Keep arms in same position, letting your free arms move in same time with the steps.

  4. Step 4

You both kick forward with your left feet. Be sure to keep hold on each other and try to keep a firm stance but not too firm. You want to move smoothly and let the dance steps flow freely so don't be too stiff, but stiff enough to keep together on the steps.

  5. Step 5

Now step down with your left feet. You kick and then step, leaving you with each of your left feet on the floor.

  6. Step 6

Now kick forward with your right feet. Same step as the left kick and then down, but with the right foot this time.

  7. Step 7

Retract your right feet but keep them in the air. You want to pull your right foot back but do not set it down as you will see in the next step, you will end up kicking back instead of stepping down.

  8. Step 8

Now kick back with your right feet. When you kick back you will end up on your feet after the following step.

  9. Step 9

Step down with your right feet. Now you can repeat the steps, keeping both leader and follower's arms in position. Remember to let your free arms swing freely in time with the music, steps and beat. Try to move smoothly together.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try to hop on each beat because this can help you keep track of the beat and counting.
  • Keep the outer hand for both leader and follower counter to the position of your outside feet.
