How to Create a Scarlet O'Hara Costume
"Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn." Those were the final words Rhett uttered to Scarlett in the classic film. Frankly, many will care about you when you are wearing a Scarlett O'Hara costume. This costume shows off the best in the style of a (thankfully to many) gone era. Make sure you hone in on your sense of fun and adventure, and get ready to dress up as Scarlett O'Hara this Halloween.

1
Find a dress that was made for the time period, or a Scarlett costume dress. See the Resources section for possibilities in purchasing your costume. It is best to buy a dark green dress like the one she made from the curtains of Tara when she had to go ask Rhett for some money. Nearly everybody is sure to recognize that as a genuine Scarlett costume.
-
2
Put on a hoop skirt underneath your dress. It is the fashion of the era, and you must have a hoop skirt to make your dress stand out.

-
3
Put on some dress boots for the time period. Scarlett was a lady, and she also rode horses before a tragic accident. Make sure that the boots are ladylike.
-
4
Have your hair done by someone who knows the history and time period. Worst case scenario is that you simply bring a photograph still of Scarlett to your regular hair dresser. It won't be difficult to recreate this American history fashion in your hair.
-
5
Put on a dark green bonnet. This was a gift from Rhett when he returned from his travels, and he gave it to Scarlett with pride. This will complete the beauty and fashion of the costume.
-
6
Put on jewelry and accessories. Scarlett was not without a certain sort of wealth. Make sure she has on a gold ring. Hers was sent back to her from the war effort!

Tips & Warnings
Experiment with other looks as Scarlett. You don't have to go with the most popular look she wore.
Don't ever use offensive jokes or references while in costume. For some, this costume alone provokes a feeling of being uncomfortable due to the way some of the writing in the film presented the slaves. You need to make sure that you make people feel comfortable.
