How to Identify Psoriasis
It is believed that psoriasis was mentioned in the Bible as tzaraat. Psoriasis was finally named in 1841, and our knowledge of it has been increasing since. Psoriasis affects the skin and joints of the patient. Psoriasis obviously causes physical effects, but it also can lead to depression and a lack of self-esteem due to its outward effects. It is important to identify psoriasis as quickly as possible, for a person's physical and mental well-being.

Identify Psoriasis
-
1
Check for red patches of skin on your body. These patches will often have silvery looking scales on them.
-
2
Identify any small scaling spots on the body. These are often seen on children.
-
-
3
Check for dried and cracked skin. The skin in these areas may be bleeding. Bleeding often occurs in joint areas, such as the elbows and knees.
-
4
Check to see if joints are swollen or stiff. The stiffness will feel something like arthritis.
-
5
Check out the fingernails of the patient. The nails in patients may have ridges, indentations, or pits in them. Discoloration may also occur. Sometimes the nail may even separate from the nail bed.
-
6
Check scalp for dry, scaly, or crusted skin. Also check the scalp, and any area that appears to be affected, for burning, itching, or any soreness.
-
7
Call a doctor and let her know what you found. It is probably best to make an appointment. While some cases of psoriasis are not harmful, some more serious cases can cause permanent damage.

Tips & Warnings
Symptoms are usually found on scalp, knees, trunk, and elbows. Check these areas thoroughly.
If you don't believe you have psoriasis, but still have some symptoms, it is best to get checked by a doctor.
Not getting examined by a doctor, even if you believe your symptoms aren't horrible, is not a smart idea. Symptoms can get worse if not treated.
