How to Suppress OCD

Obsessive compulsive disorder can affect a person’s ability to function in society. OCD is particularly dangerous because it consistently goes undiagnosed or misdiagnosed for years. Often, embarrassment surrounding mental illness may keep someone from dealing with OCD. Here are steps to suppress OCD.

Inactivity is a major culprit in the continued exacerbation of mental conditions. Exercise releases chemicals that alter the body’s makeup and mood.

Make sure that research has been done by the patient or the patient’s primary caregiver so they care work with the physician to pinpoint specific issues as quickly as possible.

      Try alternative techniques whenever possible. Most physicians support alternatives to medication when dealing with mental illness in most cases. Herbs, like St. John’s Wort, have proven to be successful in OCD cases. Inositol is a glucose that occurs naturally that has also helped OCD patients.

      Be open to medical solutions. Psychotherapy is often the first treatment given to OCD patients. A qualified clinician is needed to administer this type of therapy, but it is highly successful. More extreme measures may take the form of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), tranquilizers or psychosurgery. These solutions are for more extreme cases, but have a degree of success that warrants their use.
