A golf cart's governor keeps the vehicle from going too fast. Golf carts can become damaged, and have a higher propensity to flip over, without a factory functioning governor. On the other hand, you can't cruise around with a golf cart whose governor has been left to its initial setting. You should be careful before turning a golf cart into a higher speed vehicle, but it can be a lot of fun if you know how to handle it.

Things You'll Need:

    How to Rig Golf Carts

  1. Step 1

Locate the plastic covering behind the seat.

  2. Step 2

Unscrew and remove the plastic covering.

  3. Step 3

Locate the governor. The governor is a piece of metal in the shape of a "T." It should pivot from side to side.

  4. Step 4

Locate the silver part of the "T." It will be the larger section as well.

  5. Step 5

Connect this silver part of the "T" to the metal rod immediately behind it. Make sure it is secure enough as to prevent the silver part of the "T" from pivoting forward.

  6. Step 6

Screw the plastic plate back in place.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you do not have a rubber band you can substitute with a string.
  • Do not adjust the governor on your golf cart when the engine is hot, as you risk burning yourself.
  • If done incorrectly, you are risking doing serious damage to your golf cart.
  • Driving your golf cart without a governor can, over time, cause damage to the vehicle.
  • Golf carts whose governors have been removed or adjusted are more dangerous to drive. You are more likely to tip over, so watch your speed on turns.
