Things You'll Need:

  • book club guides, book club recommendations, book club discussions
  1. Step 1

Invite friends to your book club kickoff party at least 2 or 3 weeks before the big day. Some book clubs spend a few months on one book, slowly reading and discussing each chapter, while others digest entire works in one month, joining up to discuss the book only when it's finished. Get book club recommendations from the participants and set a schedule for the next few months.

  2. Step 2

Order book club guides for the books you plan to read. Some book publishers have created book club guides that help generate lively book club discussions. Some guides are intended for the group leader's use and others are designed so that each participant has her own. Plan ahead if you intend to use book club guides because you might need to order them directly from the publisher and possibly far in advance.

  3. Step 3

Design a menu for your book club. A vegan cookbook club party will probably require a specialized food table, whereas a survey of 20th century literature wouldn't be quite as demanding.

  4. Step 4

Decorate the house for your book club party. Use cover images in new ways, as personalized take-home book marks, or napkin rings. Make guest "goody bags" with a reading light and a journal.

Tips & Warnings
  • Everyone in attendance should participate in the book club discussions. Have a sure-fire plan for making certain that everyone has the books at the right time.
  • Don't forget to serve coffee. Some people feel badly going to book club when they haven't read the book and will stay up all night long reading. You wouldn't want them driving home tired.
