Those commercial carpet fresheners may make your home smell pleasant, but the unnatural ingredients being inhaled by your family may be quite unhealthy. That's not to mention how bad it is for the environment. The chemical residue that carpet fresheners leave on the floor can really wear on your carpet fibers over time. Not to worry! You can quickly and easily make your own herbal carpet freshener as an alternative to sprinkling harmful chemicals in your home. It’s all natural and eco-friendly. Making it is super-simple to do, and your home will smell like heaven.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Lavender Flowers
  • Baking Soda
  • Cutting Board
  • Meat Tenderizer
  • Airtight Container (with lid)
  • Vacuum Cleaner
  1. Step 1

Crush half a cup of lavender flowers to release their scent. You can do this with a meat tenderizer on a cutting board. If you have a very large carpet area that needs covering, you can crush more lavender flowers. Crush and combine only a bit at a time, though. Herbal carpet fresheners will start to smell fantastic already!

  2. Step 2

Dump the crushed flowers into a container with 1 cup of baking soda. The flowers should be noticeably more fragrant than they were before being pulverized. If not, crush them some more. Tearing with your hands also helps.

  3. Step 3

Secure the lid tightly on the container. Shake well to blend the flower bits evenly with the baking soda. Keep shaking until it is completely mixed. An herbal carpet freshener is most effective when fully blended.

  4. Step 4

Sprinkle the mixture liberally on carpets. Make sure to thoroughly covers the carpet area, but refrain from sprinkling it in excess. You don't want to drown the carpet fibers in the mixture. A thin layer is most effective.

  5. Step 5

Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes before vacuuming up the lavender mix. This recipe packs a one-two punch! The baking soda removes old odors, and the flowers actually add a refreshing scent to the carpet fibers. Your carpet will hold the scent for days.

Tips & Warnings
  • Simply sprinkle baking soda alone on the carpet if you need to quickly deodorize with no time to crush the flowers. It will absorb odors. Vacuum it up in the same way!
  • Make sure to put all animals in another room before attempting to do this kind of carpet cleaning.
