How to Cut Sunflowers

If cut properly and at the right time, sunflowers will live longer in a vase of water and give color to your home, porch or office.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Sharp pruning shears
  • Vase
  • Water

Step1
Decide which sunflowers will be cut. Choose flowers with fully-opened petals or those that are just about to bloom. They'll last longer indoors.
Step2
Hold the stem of the plant just below the flowerhead with one hand to balance it.
Step3
With the pruning shears, cut the stem at a 45-degree angle anywhere between 1 to 1 1/2 feet from the flowerhead.
Step4
Immediately place the cut flowers in a vase containing water.

Tips & Warnings

  • It is best to cut flowers early in the morning before they are exposed to the sun.
  • Be careful with pruning shears, as with all garden tools.
