How to Change Resolution in Microsoft Vista

So you just bought a new computer with Microsoft Vista, but you’re having trouble seeing things on-screen? Something that might help you is changing the resolution. The resolution on your screen determines how many pixels are on screen. Higher resolution means more pixels, which means that you have more screen area. Smaller resolutions make less room, but makes things appear bigger, which is sometimes easier to see for those of us who have eye problems. Computers can be pretty intimidating for you if you don’t know them very well, but these steps should help you change the resolution on your version of Microsoft Vista.

Instructions

    • 1

Move your mouse down to the bottom of the screen. On top of the “start” tab in the lower left of the screen.

    • 2

Click on the start tab. This will bring up a menu.

    • 3

Click on “control panel” in the menu. The control panel icon usually looks like a pen writing on a little clipboard.

    • 4

Click on the icon called “appearance and personalization”.

    • 5

      Click on “personalization”.

    • 6

Click on “display settings”. This will bring up a box menu in the middle of your screen.

    • 7

Click on the tab in the menu that says “monitor”. This will bring you to the area on this menu with a color selection area, and an area that says “resolution” with a little bar underneath it.

    • 8

Slide the bar underneath the resolution menu to your desired resolution. Sliding it to the right will make the resolution higher, and to the left will make it lower. The higher resolutions make for more open space on the screen and a sharper image; however they make the wording on the screen appear smaller. This can make it hard to read. Making the resolution smaller creates less space on the screen, but it makes the icons appear bigger and the text easier to read.

Tips & Warnings

  • When you change the resolution on your profile in Microsoft Vista, it changes the resolution on all of the profiles.

  • If you accidentally set the resolution too high, and your monitor won’t support your selection, the screen may turn black and/or flicker for a second, and then change back to normal.
