How to Feed a Lizard

Whether you decide to have a pet lizard, or come across a lizard that you would prefer to capture and feed, then you should be aware of what the lizard will need in order to surivive.

  1. Feeding a Lizard

    • 1

      Put the lizard into a 20 gallon tank. Be sure to have a heat lamp inside and a small plate of water and a log for the lizard to climb on. You should put a net cover on the tank so that the lizard will not escape. The lizard will need warmth and feel safe in order for it to eat well.

      Call the veterinarian or a pet store in order to find out the best foods to give the lizard.

      Feed the lizard insects. You can either purchase these at a pet store or capture them yourself. If you decide to capture them you can use a net and go through an area where there is high grass. This should provide various kinds of insects. Crickets are the meal of the day for lizards.

      Become educated on how many times the lizard will need to eat. Most lizards will need to eat 5 to 7 times a week.

      Feed your lizard meal worms and roaches if it is not eating many crickets. Also, you may want try feeding the lizard pieces of lettuce or small pieces of other types of vegetables for more nutritional value.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you put several insects in the tank and the lizard doesn't eat all of them by night time then remove them. Insects will attack the lizard while it sleeps so you want to make sure to take them out of the tank.

  • Do not keep the lizard in a tank without proper heating. They need warmth to stay healthy.
