Instructions

    • 1

When you finally decide that you want to get serious about growing long hair, the first step is to get a haircut. Trim off all of those dead, split ends and start with healthy hair.

    • 2

Be sure to use a moisturizing shampoo every time you wash, especially if your hair tends to be brittle and dry. When shampooing, refrain from piling it all on top of your head to avoid getting tangles.

    • 3

Follow up a shampooing with a good, moisturizing conditioner or add vinegar to your rinse water. Use a store-bought deep conditioner or use mayonnaise about once a month.

    • 4

Use a wide-toothed comb or pick when combing out your hair, instead of a brush. Be sure to work out tangles from the bottom to the top.

    • 5

Brush out your hair with a natural bristle brush once during the day to move your scalp's natural oils from your scalp to the ends.

    • 6

Avoid over-styling your hair or using a lot of chemicals. These can dry it out and cause it to break. If you must pull back your hair, be sure to use elastics that are metal-free, as the metal can rip your hair.

Regularly get your hair trimmed, about 1/4 to 1/2 inch per month, to remove any split ends. Trimming hair works like pruning a bush. Removing the dead or dying parts allow more energy to go into generating new, healthy strands. Some people even believe that you should trim your hair during the new moon to encourage growth.

Some really good tips. I wouldn't trim more than a fingernail's amount(probably 1/4") and more like once every other month to help keep the ends in shape. Average growth is only 1/2" a month. Also, comb or brush very gently starting from the ends and going up. Once detangled go over top to bottom to distribute natural oils.
