Does the idea of getting pregnant strike fear in your heart? Although pregnancy may frighten you, there are ways to keep from getting pregnant. When used correctly and consistently, these methods will keep pregnancy out of your future until you're ready to handle it.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Abstain from sexual intercourse. Know that abstinence is the only guaranteed way to keep from getting pregnant. Find alternate ways to express your feelings for your partner. Know that sex is not a relationship requirement.

  2. Step 2

Use oral or injectable contraceptives. These types of contraceptives provide protection if used correctly. There are many varieties available including Depo Provera and Seasonique. Ask your doctor to recommend the best option for you based on your health history and lifestyle.

  3. Step 3

Use condoms, diaphragms, and spermicides. Condoms and diaphragms act as barriers while spermicides work to kill sperm. These types of contraceptives are inexpensive and provide protection against pregnancy if used correctly. Experiment to find the best mix of options. For example, try using condoms along with spermicidal lubricant for extra protection.

  4. Step 4

Follow the rhythm method. Calculate your expected ovulation dates using information from your last three menstrual cycles. Avoid sexual intercourse on the days you are likely to be ovulating. Purchase a fertility monitor for a second opinion. Keep in mind that factors including health could affect the days you ovulate.

  5. Step 5

Examine long term options. Consider having tubal ligation surgery to keep from getting pregnant. This procedure works by blocking the path so that sperm and egg can't meet to fertilize. Ask your partner about receiving a vasectomy which works to prevent the release of sperm.

Tips & Warnings
  • Understand that tubal ligation and vasectomy should be considered as permanent sterilization procedures. Although these procedures may be able to be reversed, the decision to have them should not be taken lightly.
