How to Create a Sketchbook from Scratch Paper
Art supplies can be expensive. A sketch artist who practices his art regularly can find himself putting out lots of money for pencils, erasers and especially paper. There aren't many easy ways to create your own pencils or erasers, but there is any easy way to create a sketchbook from scratch or scrap paper. If you find your wallet a little empty, but your creativity is overflowing, try a do-it-yourself sketchbook.

1
Gather together your scratch or scrap paper. Sources for this paper could be junk mail, the back of announcements sent home in children's backpacks from school, paper brought home from the recycle bin at work (with permission, of course), or even old papers from your filing cabinet. Any old paper that has been used on one side, but still has a perfectly useful side, can be used for your sketchbook.

2
Choose what size you want to make the sketchbook. If any of your paper is oversized, trim it down to the correct size. An 8 1/2-by-11 book is a good size for most sketches. If you want to carry the sketchbook with you, you may choose to make a smaller-sized book.

Arrange the papers neatly, making sure that the unused side of the papers are all facing up. Use a three-hole punch to place uniform holes in the papers.

4
Fasten the papers together using paper fasteners.

Decorate the front cover if you wish.

Tips & Warnings
You can continually add paper to your sketchbook, as long as it is the same size as the rest of the book, by punching holes in the new paper and securing it to the back of the book with the paper fasteners.
Sturdy, cardboard front and back covers could be made for the sketchbook from old cereal boxes.
Children could use yard or ribbon to fasten their sketchbook together instead of paper fasteners.
If you are drawing something special that you want to give away as a gift, using the paper from this sketchbook may not be the best choice because there will be writing on the back of each page. Use your do-it-yourself sketchbook for informal and fun drawing.
