How to Punch Hard
While you don't need martial arts training to learn how to throw a punch, it doesn't hurt. Of course, there are other disciplines in which you can learn how to throw a hard punch, such as boxing. You can also learn it on your own.

1
Keep your fists tight when working out on your punching bag. It will help you avoid injury and throw an effective shot.
-
2
Use the whole fist. This technique is sometimes argued in certain forms of martial arts training, as some instructors tell their students to put the first two knuckles of the fist forward. But to use the most power and to prevent injury, you should spread the impact across all four knuckles as evenly as possible. Never use the last two knuckles exclusively. This will lead to a weak punch and could result in a broken hand.

-
3
Punch through the target. For example, if you aim to break a board with your punch--a common method of training and demonstration in the martial arts world--you must envision your target as being beyond the board. If you simply aim for the board itself, chances are the board is going to win. Aiming a few inches beyond the board will help you generate the extra power necessary to break through the wood.
-
4
Put your whole body Into It. Too many people believe the punch is all about the arms. It isn't. Put your hips into the punch. Put your leg forward and use your whole body's momentum to carry the punch forward.
-
5
Lift weights, but don't focus solely on your biceps. You need to do full-body workouts and strengthen every muscle group.

I have found what is written here to be correct. nameguy maybe you do martial arts as I have done, but when I hit square across the fist I definitely generate more power at the point of impact. there is a simple measurement you can try for this, hit a heavy bag with just two knuckles and see how far it goes, then hit square as you know your fist will do a half turn from shoulder to target to make a square hit, same with two knuckles.. I have tried this often and found the heavy bag will launch like a ceiling fan when I hit is full fisted across the knuckles. think of this, a dangerous weapon for women is high heels, by hitting with the stiletto type heel on a persons skull with penetrate to the brain, it generates 3000lbs per square inch !! but if you have a newspaper in front of it, zero impact, like no weight/power.. take a sledge hammer and hit the same person holding up the... -

This is wrong, using your whole fist in a fight will end up breaking your last two knuckles, commonly known as a "boxers break". Your first two knuckles (next to the thumb for those who may be confused) are the strongest knuckles of your fist, but can still break when hitting a hard surface. Also, when using the entire fist, there is more surface area meaning less pain (unless you're using a boxing glove where using more surface area would turn to be useless.
