1. 

   Since the surrounding air can affect the life of a piece of wood furniture, it is necessary to maintain an indoor humidity level of approximately 40%. Using a humidifier during the winter months and a dehumidifier or air conditioner during the summer months will solve this issue.

2. Lightly wash wood furniture with a non-alkaline soap and water. This will remove old wax buildup. Using a soft cloth or sponge, dry immediately.

3. Use a paste wax with a soft cloth to polish wood furniture at least twice per year. Always make certain to rub in the direction of the grain. Routine dusting should be done with a dry, soft cloth or an artist brush. Never drag a lamp or other articles across the surface since doing this can cause scratches in the finish.

4. Repairing scratches can be a simple project. For dark wood, use a felt tipped colored marker. For light wood, use a natural colored shoe polish and for cherry wood, use dark iodine.

5. To remove water marks, rings and white marks on the wood, rub the mark with salad oil or mayonnaise. Wipe the area dry and wax with paste.

6. Gently rub linseed oil on the wood to remove any cigarette burns or paint. Wipe dry and wax with paste.

7. Placement of wood furniture is very important, since light is a natural enemy of wood objects. Keep wood furniture away from radiators, fireplaces, sunny windows and other heat sources. Always use coasters, place mats and pads to protect the finish from damage caused by heat or liquids.
