At some point, many parents will be faced with a difficult behavioral issue. This can range from their child talking back to a child engaging in aggressive behavior. If you are truly at the end of your rope and need help managing your child's behavior, a parent coach is an option. Read on to learn how to choose a parent coach.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Ask about a potential coach's education and credentials. Find out if the coach has been certified by a respected program. At the very least, try to find a coach that has at least two years of experience working with families.

  2. Step 2

Do not hire the first coach that you interview. Be sure to compare several. Ask different coaches the same questions to see how each responses. This will help you to identify a coach who is compatible with your parenting style.

  3. Step 3

Be sure to get a list of references from each prospective parenting coach. Do not rely on testimonials and be sure to actually call the references to find out how the coach was able to help each family.

Tips & Warnings
  • Many parent coaches will talk with you in your home or by phone sessions.
  • Parent coaches can offer unique, objective solutions to your child's behavioral problems.
  • Parent coaches can be a source of support for frustrated parents.
  • Be sure to take the time to find the right parenting coach for your family. Some coaches can cost over $100 an hour.
