How to Print Perfect Bound Books

Perfect bound books are the kind of paperback books that most people are familiar with. The pages are glued into a smooth spine that’s part of the cover. This type of binding can actually cost less per book for medium or large quantities of books, and look more professional than other types of bindings, such as comb, spiral and wire-O. Unlike comb or spiral bindings, which many copy shops offer, you’ll probably need to find a printer that specializes in books in order to get perfect bound books printed. Fortunately, you can find a wide variety of book printers by looking online.

  1. Print Perfect Bound Books

    • 1

Proofread your text, then create the book layout using page design software. Be aware that your perfect bound book will cost less to print if you format it in a standard book size. If you need a complex book layout and don’t have the skills or software to do it yourself, you may want to hire a designer, or choose a book printer that offers design services.

    • 2

Research book printers or manufactures on the web. You may be surprised that some book printers may be less expensive than using a local printer, even including the cost of shipping.

    • 3

Make sure the printer offers all the services you need, such as perfect binding, color printing or inserts, design services, rush printing or printing in very small quantities (also called short-run printing or print on demand).

    • 4

Choose a paper type for the inside of the book and the covers, based on what the printer offers. Decide how many copies of you book you need. (Larger print orders will cost more overall, but less per book.)

    • 5

Get a quote for your perfect bound book from several book printers. Most printers offer quotes for free. Make sure to ask any questions you have about the book printer’s process or products. Some printers will let you see samples of their work for free or for a small shipping fee.

    • 6

Compare the quotes, and select a printer based on price, quality of service and how helpful the staff is.

    • 7

Submit your book to the printer. Most printers charge less if you can submit your work as an electronic file, such as PDF, rather than a hardcopy. Make sure to follow all the printer’s guidelines for preparing and submitting the file.

    • 8

Follow up with the printer, and review any proofs the printer sends you.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure the book printer you choose is reputable and offers all the services you need, without forcing you to sign up for services you don’t want.
