How to Make Your Own Yarmulke

The Jewish yarmulke or kippah is worn by Jewish men and boys to show respect for God and, according to the Jewish Literacy website, to show Jewish pride. There are many ways to make a yarmulke, including knitting, crocheting and sewing. Making a yarmulke out of felt is a quick and easy method that can used by adults and children alike.

    Things You'll Need

    • Piece of felt in the color of your choice, at least 7-by-7 inches Cloth measuring tape Sharp scissors Pins Embroidery needle Embroidery thread in the color of your choice

        Lay out the felt on a flat surface. Mark and cut an exact circle using the following diameters for the desired size:
        Small: 5 3/16 inches
        Medium: 5 5/8 inches
        Large: 6 1/8 inches
        X-Large: 6 3/10 inches

        Mark and cut one straight line from the edge to the exact center of the felt circle.

        Overlap the two cut edges 1-inch (or as much as desired to best fit head). Pin them in place.

        Sew 1/8 to 1/4-inch from the cut edge using embroidery needle and thread.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Decorate your yarmulke by embroidering around the edges in a contrasting color.

    • Always supervise young children.
