How to Knit a Basketweave Stitch

This neat-looking stitch requires a knowledge of how to do a knit and a purl stitch and creates a beautiful basketweave look to any piece that is sure to please the eye.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

• Yarn
• Knitting needles

1. Choose the yarn you want to work with and needles that match the weight of your yarn (see yarn packaging for needle size suggestions).
2. Cast on your stitches in multiples of 6 in your preferred method of casting on (example: 6 x 4 = 24 stitches).
3. Row 1: (Right Side) Knit all stitches.
4. Row 2: Purl all stitches.
5. Row 3: Knit 1, Purl 4, Knit 1, repeat these 6 stitches to the end of the row.
6. Row 4: Purl 1, Knit 4, Purl 1, repeat these 6 stitches to the end of the row.
7. Row 5: Repeat row 3.
8. Row 6: Repeat row 4.
9. Row 7: Knit all stitches
10. Row 8: Purl all stitches.
11. Row 9: Purl 2, Knit 2, Purl 2, repeat these 6 stitches to the end of the row.
12. Row 10: Knit 2, Purl 2, Knit 2, repeat these 6 stitches to the end of the row.
13. Row 11: Repeat row 9.
14. Row 12: Repeat row 10.
15. Repeat these 12 rows until your piece reaches desired length.
16. Bind it off, preferably using the basic bind-off.
