Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Determine the mounting process for your Roman shade. Decide if you want to install the shade on the inside of the window (jamb to jamb) or on the outside (bracket to bracket). If you are doing an inside mount, you will need to determine the width and length of the roller shade you will need to purchase. Measure the inside of your window in three places; top, middle and bottom. Use the smallest width to determine the width of your shade, so that your shade will operate smoothly as you raise and lower it. Measure the length of your window from its longest part to determine the length of your shade. If you are installing an outside mount, which is the easiest of the two mounting options, you will need to determine where you want your Roman shade to begin at the top of your window, and how far beyond the window you want it to extend on both sides.

  2. Step 2

Purchase the shade, according to your mounting preferences. You will need to mount your shade by installing the window brackets that usually come with it. The mounting method you choose will determine where you place your brackets.

  3. Step 3

When installing an inside mount, you should not make contact with the top of the window frame, or any other obstruction that may get in the way when the shade is raised and lowered. Before installing the brackets, you will need to position the mount ing brackets inside the window frame. The brackets need to be aligned and level with one another. When the shade is installed, it should move freely between the brackets.Step 5:

  4. Step 4

When installing an outside mount, you should likewise not make contact with the top of the window frame or any other potential obstruction. Before installing the brackets, position the mount brackets outside the window frame, clearing all obstructions. The brackets need to be aligned and level with one another. When the shade is installed it should move freely between the brackets; be sure to allow 1/8" of additional space between the brackets, so that the mechanism will rotate freely.

  5. Step 5

Test the shade to make sure it is aligned properly and working properly. If you installed a continuous-loop shade, you can remove the clutch cover to adjust the position of the chain stop.
