Sometimes you come across a baby bird or nestling that is hopping or stumbling around your yard. There once was an old wives tale that if you touched the bird, you would leave your scent and the mother would abandon it. I've learned that this is not true. I did some research and found some interesting tips to help out a baby bird.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Most of the time the bird's mother is out getting food or keeping an eye on the bird from afar. So, the more you interfere, the longer the mother bird might stay away. However, some intervening might be necessary. You may put the bird back into its nest if it is within reach. You could also make a temporary nest out of a plastic bowl and some paper towels. Create drainage holes in the bottom of the container and secure it in a bush or tree with a nail. Then place the baby bird inside.
Step2
Keep your pets and children away from the bird to keep it safe.
Step3
If there isn't a nest and you don't have anything to make a temporary nest, then be sure to move the bird to a safe location close to the original nest. For example, if the bird is near the sidewalk or road, then you should probably move it to keep it safe from cars, people and neighborhood dogs.
Step4
If you think the bird is injured and needs assistance, immediately contact your local wildlife reserve or a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for assistance. Do not attempt to care for the bird on your own. Baby birds need fed every 20 minutes and with a proper diet.
Step5
Read the articles under the Resource section for more detailed information about rescuing a baby bird.

on 7/9/2008 Sweet article. I have had this happen in my yard, but didn't know what to do. In the end that baby bird was eaten by crows. Hopefully next time I won't be so powerless.
