To get rid of household ants, first, do a good cleaning of your house, especially the kitchen. Wipe down counters. Remove the sugar bowl. Put all packages of food away. Vacuum thoroughly and wash the kitchen floor with water containing 2-3 drops of lavender oil.

Inside the house you can use a number of home remedies to get repel the household ants. Mix up a solution of vinegar and water and spray around. Sprinkle red pepper or coffee grounds around the counters. If you are comfortable with Borax, mix with sugar and sprinkle around. If ants are present, spray them with 3 parts dish soap and 1 part water. It instantly kills them.

To get rid of household ants, you have to take care of the outside of the house as well. Go to a pool store and get Diatomaceous earth and sprinkle along the side of the house. If you would prefer a home remedy, try baby powder.

Another natural way to get rid of household ants is mint plants. Grow them along the side of the house.

My sister-in-law (a Master Gardener) arranges flowers in a vase outside and then sets the vase in a large plastic garbage bag, placing a wooden dowel in the center of the flowers in the bag. Then she holds the bag up with one hand and sprays ant spray into the bag. Quickly close the bag with a twister and the dowel will hold the bag up so it doesn't crush the flowers. Let the bag set for about 2 hours and all the ants will be dead.

#3 is very important! Borax is said to be as safe as table salt (although, I still wouldn't eat it LOL) Great article! -

great article!! We use Borax and sprinkle it around the perimeter of the house. It works great!
