Things You'll Need:
- Reflective vest
-
Step 1
Run on the correct side of the road. You should always run facing traffic. That way, you can see the oncoming cars, and they can see you.
-
Step 2
Stay on sidewalks when they are available. Sidewalks keep you safely out of the path of oncoming traffic. Running on sidewalks is much safer than running on the road. If a sidewalk isn't available, run at the far edge of the road and be prepared to jump up on to the grass or pavement to avoid cars the get too close.
-
Step 3
Obey traffic laws--they are there to keep you safe. Don't try to cross in front of cars at green lights or jaywalk (or jay "run") across streets.
-
Step 4
Use caution at all intersections. Just because a car is stopped at a red light or a stop sign, don't assume it is safe to cross. When in doubt, make eye contact with the driver or wave your hand to make your presence known. When in doubt, wait for the car to pass or cross behind a stopped care.
-
Step 5
Run during the daylight hours, if at all possible. It an evening run is necessary, be sure to wear a reflective vet and light colored clothing so you will be visible to passing cars.
