A telephone market researcher is similar to a telemarketer in that a person makes blind phone calls to home phone numbers. However, instead of trying to sell a product to these individuals, a market researcher is simply collecting data for a study. While one technically doesn't need any special training for a job such as this, it is definitely not for everybody. Here is how to work as a telephone market researcher.

Begin by searching for the market research firm near you. Many malls use market research firms but most of these are for in-person interviews. You will need to find a firm that use phone interviews for market research.

Be comfortable speaking with many different people on a variety of topics. At a market research firm, you could be asking questions regarding subjects such as how much dog food a person buys in one year or if they play the state lottery. There must be no topic that you're not comfortable discussing with others in order to work as a telephone market researcher.

Have the ability to speak on the phone and type on the computer at the same time. While you won't have to do anything difficult on the computer while you're conducting a phone interview, you may be asked to input data while on the phone. Basic multitasking is an important part of being a telephone market researcher.

Find the line between being personable but not too personable. You want to be friendly enough during a phone conversion that the person on the other line doesn't hang up before you've finished with your questions. However, you don't want to strike up a 30-minute conversion with the people you're calling as you'll have plenty of other phone calls to make.

Have plenty of patience and resilience. Since many people do not distinguish between telemarketer and telephone market researcher, they will hang up on you and say awful things to you. This will happen every day that you work. In order to do your job well, you must have thick skin and a short memory.
