How to Reward Children for Good Behavior Without Bribes

In an effort to get kids to behave without using corporal punishment, many parents are turning to bribery. They give money for good grades. They give candy for being good while shopping. They get parties for obeying in schools. The problem with this is that children do not behave when a prize is not involved. Good behavior is now based on incentive. This is a dangerous precedent to set. Instead, it is better to reward children for good behavior without bribes.

Instructions

    • 1

Give praise. Rewards do not have to be monetary. When a child performs well in any way, stop what you are doing and tell them that you are proud of them. Acknowledge all of their accomplishments with kind words and smiles.

    • 2

Give hugs. Hug your children often, especially when they do a good job such as getting good grades, cleaning up behind themselves, or helping a sibling. This shows them that good deeds are rewarded with good feelings, not money or toys.

    • 3

Give privileges. As children get older, they will want more privileges such as staying up later, visiting their friends, and talking on the phone. Tie their behavior into gaining more responsibility and freedom.

    • 4

Plan outings. When they do something great like being on the honor role all year, or keeping their room clean for a month, take them out to dinner, or even to an amusement park. Concentrate of the value of time together versus the money spent.

    • 5

Let them suffer the consequences of bad behavior. Parents tend to bail children out and shelter them when the time comes to pay for their wrongdoings. If they take something from a store make them return it. If they misbehave in class, don’t make excuses let them stay after school. If they don’t do their homework, let them get the bad grade instead of bailing them out and doing it for them.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be patient and consistent and the child's behavior will begin to change.
