How to Beat the Shock and Awe Level of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

In previous levels of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, you were periodically put in the position of having to defend against wave after wave of enemies while waiting for backup or extraction to arrive. Now it's your turn to come to the rescue of your fellow soldiers. The "Shock and Awe" mission will see you rescuing several groups of American Marines that have stalled or crashed in the fight for a Middle Eastern city, and the enemy won't make it easy for you.

Things You'll Need

  • Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3

Instructions

  1. Fast Chopper, Big Gun

    • 1

Watch the short intro from your position behind a Mark 19 helicopter-mounted mortar gun. You will see some of the action taking place in the pitched battle raging throughout the city.

    • 2

Watch for RPG and machine gun nests on the rooftops as you begin flying over buildings. Just a few hits with an RPG will mean game over. The biggest challenge is lining up the shot on the pitching chopper, but once you get your cross-hairs on your target, the nests won't stand a chance.

    • 3

Watch the ground for enemy troop carriers and armor. Destroying the troop carriers won make a difference until your chopper begins to land, but they sure make pretty explosions. Like RPGs, enemy tanks can take you out in short order, so concentrate on them first.

    • 4

Pay attention to the heat gauge on the right side of the screen. It displays how hot your Mark 19 is running. Overheating the gun will put it out of commission for about 10 seconds, and that's usually all the time the enemy needs to take you out.

    • 5

As your initial ride comes to an end and you lower to the ground, be sure to take out all enemies in the area, starting with the two tanks. Failing to take out the tanks will make your position on the ground precarious at best, and you should always take the opportunity to thin the enemy numbers as much as possible.

    The Streets

    • 6

Follow your team through the streets to where another squad is pinned down.

    • 7

Concentrate on taking out enemies as you see them instead of moving from cover point to cover point. There aren't enough enemies in the area to slow you down, and if you are at least a decent shot, you shouldn't have a problem.

    • 8

Save grenades for later in the level.

    • 9

Meet the American team and shepherd them to the extraction point, which is only a short distance from where they were pinned down. When you get there you will find yourself back behind the big gun on a troop carrying helicopter.

    No One Gets Left Behind

    • 10

Continue taking out enemy nests and armor with the Mark 19. Always keep an eye out for enemy RPGs. You will soon receive word that a cobra pilot has been shot down and is surrounded.

    • 11

Follow your squad out onto the streets once more. This is a short rescue mission. The downed chopper is only about a block away from where you landed, and enemy activity is surprisingly light.

    • 12

Take out the two enemies who pop out in front of you. They will be running the same direction you are, so they shouldn't even see you until it's too late.

    • 13

When you get to the downed chopper, toss a few hand grenades at the closer enemies heading toward you down the adjacent street. One or two will lighten the incoming fire, but more will stall you long enough to probably get you killed by enemy fire, if you don't simply run out of time.

    • 14

      Pick up the chopper pilot.

    • 15

Turn tail and run. There's nothing else for you to do at this point except run back to the chopper. Your squad should keep the enemies off your back just fine.

Tips & Warnings

  • Hand grenades won't get you nearly as far as your riffle-mounted grenade launcher will in this level. Many of the enemies you will face will be attacking from rooftops and windows, making a hand toss nearly impossible.

  • You only have 90 seconds to rescue the downed chopper pilot, so stalling or prolonged engagements isn't advisable.

  • The only shooting you should do when rescuing the cobra pilot is to take out the two enemies that pop out directly in front of you. Any other shooting will put you in enemy cross-hairs for too long, and will almost certainly end with a mission failure.
