Coxsackie Virus is also known as hand, foot and mouth disease. It is highly contagious and gets its name from Coxsackie, New York where it was first discovered.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Wash hands frequently to avoid the spread of germs. Coxsackie virus is spread through direct contact and contaminated surfaces.

  2. Step 2

Avoid public swimming pools and swimming holes. It is possible to get coxsackie even in the ocean, avoiding highly populated beaches is advised. Public kiddie pools are probably the worst culprit as this virus is spread in feces and water will carry the bacteria.

  3. Step 3

Stay clear of any known infected person for one week.

  4. Step 4

Possible signs of infection: fever (mild or high), vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, convulsions, difficulty breathing, sleepiness, sores on the body or in the mouth, red, watery or swollen eyes and headache or body aches.

  5. Step 5

Avoid spreading the virus by keeping children home from school or daycare and public swimming places. Teach children to cover their mouths when coughing and sneezing into their sleeves and not their hands. Wash common toys in daycare and home settings.

  6. Step 6

Call your doctor immediately if any of these signs are present.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never diagnose a child on your own. It is important to call your pediatrician when any unusual signs are present.
  • Coxsackie generally clears up on its own but in some cases, it may cause severe damage.
