With changing rules and regulations, it's important to start your packing by visiting the Transportation Security Administration's website (http://www.tsa.gov). It's also a good idea to double check size and weight restrictions for each airline you are flying on. Remember that domestic and international flights may have different restrictions.

Choose an appropriate bag based on the TSA guidelines and airline size and weight restrictions. Remember that you may want to bring fragile souvenirs back home in this bag, so choose something with a little extra room.

Make sure to keep all important documents and identification in an easily accessible spot. Also remember to put any hygenie items in a handy spot as you may need to pull them out for inspection at the security check point. Pack heavy or bulky items at the bottom of the bag so they don't become a nuisance while getting through the airport. Items like iPods, books, magazines, and snacks are best kept in the middle or side of the bag.

The most important step is to double check what you have packed. Make sure all essential items are packed and ready to go. Think about what you actually need and what can be left behind. A carry-on bag can get very heavy while walking through long airport terminals, so try to pack as light as possible.

Tips & Warnings
Consider what items you will need right away when arriving at your destination. It may be a good idea to pack those in your carry-on bag to avoid digging for them in a large suitcase while in a hotel lobby or sidewalk.
It's always a good idea to double check what items can or cannot be taken into or out of a foreign country. This will speed up your time at security check points and prevent a frustrating situation.
Don't overpack or forget to leave room for extra souvanirs!
