How to Avoid Religious Cults

Religious cults are growing more and more popular these days. Most religious cults claim to read the same Bible that we do, but most of the practices of their organization are not biblical at all. We, as Christians, should be able to discern these type of things. The bible warns us of sheep in wolves clothing. The bible specifically tells us that there will be false Christs and false prophets. It also explains to us how to recognize them.

• Spirit of discernment

1. Remember to pray before you make a decision on joining any type of religious group. Ask God to let you know if this is His will for you.
2. Read God's word on the regular. If an individual or organization tries to force you to do anything that is not biblical, you should stay away.
3. Ask questions and find out all the information you can before joining a religious group. If there is nothing to hide, they shouldn't have a problem with answering any questions that you may have.

Tips & Warnings

• While performing step 1, keep in mind Proverbs 3:5 & 6 which says: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths." This means that we should acknowledge God before making any decision. He will direct us.
• In reference to step 3: A lot of religious cults don't let you know the true customs of their organization until you have joined. By then it may be very difficult for you to get out.
