So you’re looking for freelance writing work? Google yields overwhelming and non-specific results, major writing websites can be confusing, and that email newsletter you subscribed to ended up being a bust. Fear not, freelancing friends! Here are the best sites to hit when looking for freelance work, and a few support networks to turn when you need a writing friend.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Freelance Writing Jobs (www.freelancewritinggigs.com)
    - If you are looking for work and support, this is the best one-stop-shop. Every week day Deb combs the internet and pulls out credible job offers that offer worthwhile pay. Jobs usually range from paid blogging positions, to translation needed, to copywriting, to freelance editing. In addition to having amazing job postings, the site also hosts one of the best, most supportive communities on the web for freelance writers. Start here in your search!

  2. Step 2

    Craigslist (www.craigslist.org)
    – Unknown to many freelancers, especially those starting out, are the “Writing/Editing” and “Writing Gigs” section on each city’s page at Craigslist. This is a great place to grab work, though you have to keep in mind that – like the other aspects of craigslist – there is no filtering system, so you need to be able to weed the worthwhile from the scams. You can find some really interesting opportunities (I always have!) but just keep your guard up.

  3. Step 3

    Problogger (www.problogger.net)
    – This sight is not solely dedicated to jobs for freelancers, but it has a decent job board that posts listings for (you guessed it) blogging spots. This site is a great read in addition to the job listings because there are awesome articles on how to get traffic to your site, increase you feeds, and other tips on making your blog, personal or professional, a success.

  4. Step 4

Those three sites will give you a great start for finding work. There are some sites that you are required to have a paid subscription with to get the jobs, but if you are just beginning freelancing I don’t see a need for it. In terms of non-site posting support, some great sites to network with other freelancers include:

    Life of a Writer (www.mistisandefur.blogspot.com)
    The Life Uncommon (www.thelifeuncommon.net)
Successful Blog by Liz Strauss (www.successful-blog.com)
    the Final Word (blog.thefinalword.org)

These four blogs focus on the highs and lows of a freelancer and offer great industry insight.

Tips & Warnings
  • Best of luck to all! There are some awesome writing opportunities out there!
  • keep on your guard for scams or jobs that take advantage of new writers
  • before you start, I suggest you set your limit for how much you expect to be paid per word ($.05 is a reasonable start rate) and try to keep the offers you accept in your range
  • no matter who the client, always give gigs your best effort ...you never know when an old gig will resurface to hurt or help you!

on 7/23/2008 Thanks for the great resources, I hadn't heard of these. I use Elance, but the competition is fierce, and Guru.com and GetAFreelancer.com - both of which have some good projects if you look hard enough. Happy freelancing!
