Several practical tips on saving the environment and adding a little green to your wallet.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sorting bins
  • Heavy duty garbage bags
  • Permanent marker
  1. Step 1

First and foremost we need to identify what we are dealing with hear. Helping the planet, this means recycling. To some thats just more work to do, but if you look at the overall picture there are alot of recycling facilities that want your recyclable goods. In fact many will pay you per lb. Common recyclable materials include; tin cans, aluminum cans, plastics, cardboard, and paper. Check your phone directory for local recycling businesses in your area, give them a call, they will be happy to tell you what types of materials they buy and there current prices.

  2. Step 2

Find yourself some nice large containers with lids, perhaps 35 gallon garbage containers. 35 - 55 gal drums work well also. The number and size of the containers will vary based upon your personal need. These will be used as sorting and storage bins. (NOTE: some recycling centers offer recycling bins, check your local centers for availability and details.)

  3. Step 3

Once you have identified what recyclables you toss out every day with the garbage you will realize your throwing money away. Set up a separate bin for each item you plan to recycle. It might be a good idea to mark each bin with a permanent marker.

  4. Step 4

Crush your recyclables, this can be done manually or you could use your trash compactor to maximize your storage space!

  5. Step 5

All thats left to do now is wait until your bins are full and haul your bounty to the recycling facility of your choosing and collect your newfound rewards.

  6. Step 6

The best is always kept for last, get your neighborhood involved. Stop them at the garbage can and ask them why they are throwing away their hard earned money!

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember to check with your local recycling establishments for acceptable items and related prices. I have made my share of money recycling car batteries.
  • Don't forget to reuse your yard clippings and tree trimmings as mulch.

on 6/25/2008 Great ideas. We take scrap metal type stuff in about every 6 months. You'd be surprised how much we can haul in and how much $ we get for it! 5 stars.
