Just a few short years ago, homeowners could take a second mortgage, improve their homes, and be secure in knowing that the upgrades had pushed up their home's value. Today with home prices falling in many areas, it's time to look for more economical ways to redecorate. Here are a few: Does this Spark an idea?

Change colors. Redoing your walls will perk up a place. Painting is the most cost effective way to change the look of a room. If you've never picked up a brush, consider looking into free classes at a local home improvement store. Colors can range from classic ivory which will stay in style for years, to a bolder color scheme that plays off the shades of your furniture. If you've decided to paint a single wall in your room with a color accent like aqua, find accessories like vases or lamp bases that match that shade.

Wallpaper murals are now available that can give you the illusion of looking out a picture window. Target sells a variety for under $100 ranging from a view of the Eiffel Tower at night to horses galloping through the wild west.

Overhead lighting is simply not flattering, but that is how most rooms are equipped. Instead, I rely on lights placed where I need them. Not only are these lights more efficient, because you're illuminating where needed, but they make a room look cozier. There are many lamps available for little money.

Plants bring the outside in. One of my favorites is a pothos. I've had mine for decades. A pothos can send out shoots as long as ten feet and drape dramatically in windows or over bookcases. They are very hardy. If you have a friend with a green thumb, it's easy to ask for shoots, or in the case of a spider plant, little babies that won't cost anything for you to replant. Tall potted plants like a large palm can add a dramatic flourish to a corner. For more tips, see my Ehow article, "How to Choose Easy to Care for House Plants."

Bathrooms are easy to accessorize. Choose a dramatic splash of bold colors for towels, toilet seat covers and the bathroom mat. If you're replacing your shower curtain, be sure to let it air out well, with an open window. Recent research shows that the new shower curtains release volatile compounds that are harmful.

Finally, simply rearrange your furniture. Many of us filled our living spaces over time. If you take a close look, you might find a more effective grouping that can change the look of a room while increasing its functionality.
