This article will teach you the fundamentals of playing Spades

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 4 People
  • Deck of cards
  • pen and paper
  1. Step 1

Start by dealing 13 Cards to each of the four players. You and your partner must sit drectly across from each other.

  2. Step 2

Group each card into the corresponding suites. ie hearts, clubs, diamonds and spades

  3. Step 3

Group the cards from highest to lowest Ace is always high in spades

  4. Step 4

Bid on your hand Their are a total of 13 "Books" Generally you can count the Aces and the Kings. If you have only two of a particular suite like diamonds bid 1 for that suite if you have a spade to trump.
The team that dealt the cards must always bid first for the round.

  5. Step 5

Once the bids are written down the person to the left of the dealer leads first. A spade can never be lead in a hand unless it has "trumped" a suite. A trump can never happen unless the player whos turn to play is out of the current suite on the table.

  6. Step 6

When a "book" is won, the team that wins the book will pick it up and put it next to them. A book will be a total of 4 cards, one round of play during the dealt hand. Remember there are 13 books per dealt hand.

  7. Step 7

At the end of the hand compare your books to what you and your partner bid. Each book that you made is worth 10 points. If you and your partner bid 6 and you get 6 books then you get 60 points. However if you get 7 you get 61 points. The extra point is counted as a bag. When the total bags throughout your game grows to 10 your team goes back 100 points. If you only get 5 books and you bid 6 you go back 60 points. (10 points for each book you bid). Once the round is recorded the person to the left of the dealer becomes the current dealer. Thus the deal is always rotated.

  8. Step 8

There is a bid called NIL in spades. Which means that you or your partner are saying that you will not take ANY books. (this is harder then you think) If you do not take any books then you will get 100 points for that hand. However if you take even 1 you will go back 100 points. ie. if you bid nil and your partner bids 3 and he/she gets his 3 and you dont get any you get 130 points for that hand.

  9. Step 9

The first team to 500 wins.
