How to Administer Flea Treatment on Your Pets
As many pet owners know, little fleas can become a big problem. They sometimes carry illnesses and are even more problematic to pets that are prone to flea allergy dermatitis. In addition to making your pet uncomfortable, fleas reproduce quickly and an infestation is likely to occur. The best way to prevent an infestation is to apply treatment to your pets soon after you notice the fleas.

1
Purchase flea medication that will work. Some of the cheaper brands that are found in grocery stores often do not work. Although more expensive, brands like Frontline and Advantage are extremely effective in ridding your pets of fleas.

2
Check the box and be sure that the treatment that you purchase is for the correct weight and type of pet (cat treatment is packaged and sold separately from dog treatment). Flea treatments are categorized by weight and species. Do not use cat treatment on dogs or vice versa unless the package says that the treatment is safe for both.

When you are ready to administer the treatment, consider using a muzzle if your pet is one to bite. Depending on how fidgety your pet is, you may want to ask someone else to help you by holding your pet down while you apply the treatment.

4
It is best to apply the treatment to the area on your pet’s back where the head and shoulders meet, so the pet will not lick the area. Most flea treatments are not harmful if ingested by your pet, but they will not work as effectively if your pet licks it off.

5
Open the tube of treatment and spread the fur in the area mentioned. Squeeze all of the contents of the tube onto the skin between the shoulder blades of your pet. Try to get the treatment on the skin and not the fur as it will not work as well on the fur. Most topical treatments will make your pet's hair feel oily. If you feel that one tube is too much up by his shoulders, you can squeeze half between the shoulder blades, and half at the base of the backbone, where it meets the tail.

You’re done! The flea treatment is stored in the oil glands beneath your pet’s fur and reapplies to the skin via the hair follicles. Flea treatment kills adult fleas and prevents eggs and larva from maturing. If properly applied, treatment should be effective for 30 days.
