How to Keep Your Hair Healthy

Taking good care of your hair, and keeping it healthy, is an important part of your daily hygiene. Different types of hair may require unique types of care but, in general, hair care is essentially the same. Hair care also includes proper care of the scalp, since your hair grows from follicles underneath the skin. You can keep your hair healthy, shiny, untangled and looking great. Maintaining your healthy hair in the first place is a lot easier than fixing mistakes.

How to Keep Your Hair Healthy

  1. Step 1

Wash:Hair needs to be washed with shampoo to remove dirt, grease and other debris. Choose a shampoo that has a low PH level so that it's not too harsh on your hair. A higher PH level in your shampoo can cause your hair to feel dry and rough. Get your hair wet with warm water and rinse with warm water. If you have really oily hair, you might benefit from a higher PH level in your shampoo. If you wash your hair every day you do not need to repeat the wash (shampooing twice), but if you do not wash your hair every day you may benefit from shampooing twice.

  2. Step 2

Condition:Use a conditioner and rinse with cold water. Conditioner helps keep your hair healthy, soft, shiny, and makes it easier to untangle. You might not need a conditioner. Your hair might be naturally soft and free of tangles. However, many of us can benefit from at least a little bit of light conditioner. Take the time to rinse out all of the conditioner from your hair before leaving the shower.

  3. Step 3

Dry:Dry your hair gently with a towel by blotting it. A microfiber towel is the best kind to use on your hair because it removes more water from your hair than other towels. Blow drying is not recommended because the heat and air can damage your healthy hair.

  4. Step 4

Untangle:Use a simple comb to get all of the snarls out of your hair. Having a variety of wide toothed and narrow toothed combs can help greatly. If you have curly hair you might want to start with a wide toothed comb.

  5. Step 5

Trim:Get your hair trimmed about every two months or so (depending on your hair) to remove damaged hair, such as split ends.

  6. Step 6

Care for Your Scalp:Your hair comes from your scalp, which needs to be taken care of as well. A healthy scalp will give you healthier hair. Wash your hair as explained above to keep the pores on the scalp from getting clogged. Use a scrub such as a facial exfoliant to rub on your scalp. This will help remove dead skin cells so new ones have room to grow. Avoid using hot water (keep it warm) and avoid blow drying. Both can dry out and damage your scalp and, in turn, damaging your hair.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always be gentle on your hair.
  • Try to avoid gels, hair sprays, mousse and other hair products.

on 9/30/2009 Hello honey - I have read your article and sadly did not find a solution to my problem. I already perform washing conditioning and drying as you advise but my hair is very thin light and it keep floating a round looking as if I have just grabbed into an outlet. Is there any more advise you could give?
