How to Start Modeling

The world of modeling is not much different than show business. It’s a brutal industry and unless you proceed with caution, you can get scammed and lose money. There are certain steps that every individual should take if he or she wants to pursue a career in modeling.

1. Make a portfolio. Having a portfolio is one of the most important steps you must take if you want to start a career in modeling. Hire a good photographer and put together a portfolio which demonstrates your strongest modeling assets. It is a good idea to showcase a variety of looks. This demonstrates your versatility as a model.

2. Look for casting calls in your area. Often times agencies will put casting call ads in the newspaper or on the radio. Look for these casting calls and do your best to attend. Don’t be upset if the first few casting calls don’t go as well as you hoped. Each experience will make you stronger and you will learn more about how to present yourself as time progresses.

3. Find an agent. Once you’re convinced that modeling is what you want to do, seek out representation. Try to find an agent to represent you. The agent’s job is to do your bidding. He or she will represent you and try to find you work. Oftentimes, the agents have the lowdown on who needs models. If you have an agent, it’s likely that you’ll find more work.

4. Seek out the market in which you want to model. For example, do you see yourself as a print model or strutting down the runway? While both markets look for similar qualities, they each require a slight variance of skills.

5. Get a coach. Once you’ve figured out which market you’re interested in modeling for, hire a coach. This individual will teach you the basics of modeling such as how to walk and how to pose.

6. Realize you may have to start out little. Don’t be frustrated if the first jobs you get aren’t big ones. In the world of modeling, a potential model must pay his or her dues. Just remember, hard work pays off. Good luck.
