The easiest way to completely change your bathroom is by putting a new paint color on the walls. Paint is not very expensive with a gallon costing between $12 and $30 at most home improvement stores. The amount of paint you’ll need depends on the size of your bathroom, but most can get by with no more than three gallons. This is counting the main wall color and a trim color. If you are brave you can even find paint on sale that others had mixed and then didn’t purchase because the color wasn’t to their liking. Have an associate of the store open the can, and if you like the color go with that to save a few dollars.

Once you have the new paint on the walls you can pick accessories. One accessory change that makes a big impact is a new mirror or medicine cabinet. You can find nice mirrors at swap meets, flea markets, garage sales, and antique shops for very reasonable prices. If you find something you like but it’s the wrong color all you need to do is take some of the left over paint from the trim and jazz it up a bit. Stores such as Wal-mart and Target have nice mirrors and medicine cabinets these days also that may be more to your liking. You should be able to find something for less than $50 to make this change.

Everything is coming together nicely. You have new paint on the walls, a new mirror over the sink, and a new shower curtain. One more thing you can do is buy some shelves to put on the walls and set candles or knick knacks on them. Many mass merchandise stores have small shelves appropriate for bathroom remodeling that are inexpensive. You should be able to find them starting around $8. Once you get the shelves and any other accessories set out, your bathroom should look totally different.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check yard sales and garage sales for bargains.

  • Check clearance racks in stores for shelves and mirrors. Sometimes there are only small nicks that won’t even be noticeable

  • Adding candles around the tub is another idea.

  • Always paint in a well ventilated area.

  • Buy cloth shower curtains if possible to avoid toxic fumes from plastic.
