The ceiling ball is a defensive shot that is used in racquetball for a number of different reasons and in several different circumstances. In order to become even a moderately good racquetball player, it is imperative that an individual master the art of the ceiling ball. Here's how to hit a ceiling ball:

How to Hit a Ceiling Ball in Racquetball

  1. Step 1

Get into your normal striking position. You should never allow your opponent to see what shot you're going to hit next before you hit, so make sure that you assume the same position to hit your ceiling ball as you would before hitting any racquetball shot.

  2. Step 2

Hit the ball when it's high. Instead of waiting for the ball to get at, or below, your knee level, as you would on most other racquetball shots, it's best to hit a ceiling ball while the racquetball is still relatively high off of the floor.

  3. Step 3

Strike less hard than a power shot. As you strike the ball, take a little bit of power off of it compared to an aggressive and offensive shot.

  4. Step 4

Aim the ball for the ceiling, roughly 2 feet short of the front wall.

  5. Step 5

Get into a good return position. After you hit the ceiling ball your opponent will have to head to the back of the court and attempt a return. Use this time to take up a good offensive return position just behind the service area.

  6. Step 6

Watch your opponent's return and plan your next shot accordingly.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always watch your opponent's return shot to see where, exactly, your ceiling ball ended up and if you could have done something better.
  • Ceiling balls hit to an opponent's backhand are generally more effective than those to the forehand.
  • The ceiling ball is great as a defensive shot that will allow you to get into position and take a little breather during a heavy volley.
  • If you hit your ceiling ball too hard, as you would a power shot, then the racquetball will drive back to the back wall and give your opponent as easy kill shot, so be cautious.
