How to Activate XM Radio Online

Satellite radio is the wave of the future for listening to your favorite music. It gives you musical and other radio choices that were never available years ago. One of the most popular satellite radio systems is XM. Once you've made the commitment and purchased an XM radio, you'll need to activate it.

• XM radio connected to a power source and antenna

1. Turn on your XM radio and tune it to channel 0. The display will read your XM radio's identification number. This number will include both letters and numbers. Write this number down, then head to your computer.

2. Go to the XM radio website. A high-speed connection to the Internet will make this go faster, but you can activate your XM radio online with a dial-up connection.

3. Click on the tab for activating a new XM radio. This will take you to a screen where you'll enter your XM radio's identification number.

4. Choose a screen name and password to create an account on the XM website. The password needs to be at least seven characters long and include at least one capital letter, one lowercase letter and one number.

5. Enter your personal information for the activation of your XM radio. This information will include your name, address and email address. You'll also need to choose which service plan you want to purchase. Enter your credit card number to finish activating your XM radio online.

6. Turn on your XM radio and tune it to Channel 1. XM will send a signal out to your XM radio to activate it. You'll need to leave the radio tuned to Channel 1 for 15 to 20 minutes.

Tips & Warnings

• To finish activating your XM radio online, you must turn on your XM radio within an hour of making the payment. The signal that XM sends to your XM radio is good for only that long. If you don't turn on the XM radio in that time frame, you'll have to get XM to refresh your signal.
