Dress appropriately. Avoid long, flowing skirts or dangling shirt sleeves that extend beyond the wrist. Avoid clothing made of highly flammable materials, such as rayon. Pull long hair back into a clip or ponytail. And consider gloves, especially for children.

Designate a specific area to use sparkler hand-held fireworks safely. On concrete is best, away from dry grass, bushes or any thick vegetation. Take care to unclutter the area of any highly flammable materials, such as cardboard boxes or newspapers.

Fill a big glass bowl or metal bucket with water for discarded sparklers. They stay hot for some time after going out, and the last thing you want is someone to step on them with bare feet. Of course, you should also make sure everyone is wearing shoes.

Light sparklers for children. Just because it’s a special occasion doesn’t mean a child should be using matches or lighters.

Do not try and relight a sparkler if it malfunctions. Set it in the water and light another one.
