You may think you cannot afford air conditioning. Or perhaps your house is not able to handle a central air conditioning unit without extensive remodeling. There are a variety of styles, including portable models and window units for sale. Read on to get ideas on how to find an inexpensive air conditioner and stay cool this summer.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Classified ads
  • Computer
  • Internet
  1. Step 1

Check with family members and friends. Perhaps they know someone who is selling an air conditioner at work or school, or have one themselves they want to sell.

  2. Step 2

Inquire with friends, relatives or neighbors to see if there is a service, appliance or tool you can trade for the use of an air conditioner for the season.

  3. Step 3

Go online to craigslist.com, eBay.com, and the other links located within this article. Search for a window air conditioner unit. On craigslist.com you will have to move quickly, as it is a local service, but you will not have the hassle of shipping the air conditioner.

  4. Step 4

Check the classified advertising section of your daily or weekly newspaper. If you do not subscribe to the newspaper, ask someone else to save that section for you, or go to the grocery store and pick up a free weekly bargain type newspaper. There are often quite a few people selling air conditioners, especially if they no longer have a need for them. This would be true at the end of the season or around the first of the month when people move most often.

  5. Step 5

Place a free "air conditioner wanted" ad on bulletin boards in your area. You can also place a free classified want ad (in most cities) on craigslist.com or livedeal.com.

  6. Step 6

Shop at area garage sales, overstock sales and auctions. You can often find inexpensive air conditioners here because people are just looking to clean out their homes or offices and not necessarily to get the most money for their old air conditioner unit.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always be sure a used or refurbished air conditioner functions properly at all speeds and levels before you purchase it. Do not be afraid to ask for a "no lemon" guarantee.

on 6/22/2008 Really good advice. I remember putting up with the hot summers in a non-air conditioned apartment. Ugh! Why suffer when it really isn't too expensive to correct the problem?
