Magazines are ever popular entertainment for people of all ages and walks of life. Most magazines sell at newsstands and grocery stores because of either who is on their cover or a headline or article title on the cover. Thus cover design is extremely important.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • computer
  • Design software
  • Photo or artwork
  • Article titles
  1. Step 1

Open a design software program on your computer. Set the design area to the exact measurements of the magazine cover (whatever that may be for the exact magazine).

  2. Step 2

Go through your photos or artwork and look over all your options. Select a photo that is striking, interesting, beautiful or fun (depending upon what you magazine represents and the story entails). You want something that will grab people's attention. Import the photo or artwork.

  3. Step 3

Cut out the design of the photo if you want it to stand out from the background. Using a paint splash tool fill in the background with a different color that will make the photo or artwork pop.

  4. Step 4

Insert or type in the title of the magazine. Make sure it is bold print and prominently displayed. Typically the title goes at the top but you might try something else if your magazine is a little different. Type in all the important, interesting, funny and eye catching article titles. Have them in different font sizes and varieties of bold versus italicized and so forth.

  5. Step 5

Print out a proof of the cover. Look it over for typos and other errors. Stare at the entire cover and show it to others. Get their feedback as to whether it is eye catching and if they would purchase it. Make any adjustments as needed.

Tips & Warnings
  • Choose easy to read fonts
  • Don't add in so many titles that it clutters the picture or covers it
