Alaska is truly a wonderland of huge views and open space. If you have always wanted to own a small, cozy cabin in the woods, now might be the time to get started. When it is finished, you can settle in to your favorite chair in front of a warmly glowing fireplace and watch the four-legged world go by. Here are some general steps for building an Alaska cabin that may help you plan your materials and your time.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A beautiful piece of land
  • A floor plan
  • Logs
  • Tools
  1. Step 1

Find a perfect piece of property. A web search for “Alaska land” will give you a number of resources to begin your quest. Look for land that has everything you dream about–waterfront, mountain views, wildlife–you name it. This is perhaps the most important component, so don’t scrimp.

Decide if you will build your cabin from scratch or if you will build a kit home. If you're going to build a kit home, search for “Alaska cabin kit,” to find the perfect floor plan.

  3. Step 3

Design your floor plan; you might want to get professional advice to help you map out plumbing and electric wiring (if any). If you’re going rustic, go for it!

  4. Step 4

Find a source for logs. If your lot is wooded, you have it made. Start cutting logs, drag them to your prepared cabin site and start peeling them and drying them. Depending on your plans, you may also need to scribe your logs so you can stack them for a tighter fit.

Build your foundation (post and beam, concrete block) and start stacking (lining up) logs. If your cabin does not have framing, you can cut in your doors and windows to suit your taste and the view.

Tips & Warnings
  • Select the perfect site and you can't go wrong.
  • Don't expect to finish your cabin in a weekend, or even in one season. Take your time and enjoy the process.
  • Watch for bears.
