Make an Herbal Body Scrub

Affordable homemade salt scrubs are all the rage these days. By following just a few simple steps, you’ll be fast on your way to spa-quality products at affordable everyday prices. Salt scrubs are perfect for exfoliating the body and adding essential herbs can serve as an important healing and nourishing property for sensitive skin. Here's how to make a gentle exfoliating herbal body scrub that will leave behind a complex nourishing component to your skin.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1/2 c. Sea salt
  • 1 tsp. Olive oil
  • 1/4 tsp. Grapeseed oil
  • 1/4 tbs. Jojoba oil
  • 4 Drops of vitamin E (or 1 capsule)
  • 5 Drops of essential oil (optional, according to preference, like lavender or chamomile)
  • 1/3 tsp. Lemongrass
  • 1/3 tsp. Peppermint
  • 1/3 tsp. Sage
  • 1/3 tsp. Sandalwood
  • 1/3 tsp. Thyme
  • 1/3 tsp. Ginger
  • 2 Small mixing bowls
  • Spoon
  • Food processor (optional)
  • Herb crusher (optional)
  • Airtight container
  • Decorative widemouthed jars
  1. Step 1

Combine the 6 herbs together in a food processor and pulse them to a fine powder. If you don't have a food processor, you may use a blender, herb crusher or the back of a spoon. Make sure the herbs are a very fine powder.

  2. Step 2

Make your salt scrub base. In a separate bowl, mix the salt and oils together using a fork. Make sure the mixture is thoroughly combined so that the oil has completely saturated the salt. Set aside and let sit for one hour.

  3. Step 3

Check the consistency of the mixture. After an hour, check the scrub base to see if the salt has settled to the bottom. There should be a thin layer (about half an inch) of oil on top. If you need to add more oil, do so now, then mix and set aside.

  4. Step 4

Add the herbs. Once the scrub mixture is the desired consistency, you may add your crushed herbs. Use a fork to combine the herbs thoroughly through the salt and oil. Your herbs should be fine enough that you see only a thin trace of them throughout the salt and oil mixture.

  5. Step 5

Store the mixture. Scoop the mixture into an airtight container. Use a spoon and spatula to transfer the mixture into a sealable container. If you're giving the scrub away as a gift, try using vintage canning jars or clear widemouthed glass jars.

  6. Step 6

Add your fragrance. Once the herbs are fully combined, you may add the essential oil. This should be the last step you do, as essential oils disperse quickly. Mix gently, yet briskly with the fork.

  7. Step 7

Use your scrub. To use, apply the mixture to damp skin. Gently exfoliate in small, circular motions. Rinse with warm water.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure to tightly seal the jar after each use, so that your scrub doesn’t dry up.
  • Don't use a salt scrub if you have any cuts, have just shaved or have just been sun bathing.
  • Test the scrub on a small portion of your skin before using it all over to make sure that you don’t have a reaction.
  • If you have sensitive skin, be careful of using fragrances and essential oils. This scrub works just as well if you skip the essential oils.
