Like most people, you are probably concerned about environmental pollutants and toxic substances in your home. Commercially produced paints, both for industrial or residential use and for popular hobbies, often contain substances that are hazardous in ways that we are only just now becoming aware of. Fortunately, it is very simple to create your own oil-based paints for worry-free creative fun! Read on to find out how to make your own paint out of easily obtained items from art supply shops, hardware stores and most supermarkets.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Raw linseed oil
  • Pure turpentine or citrus thinner (natural solvents)
  • Powdered color pigments
  • Wooden spatulas for mixing
  • Tablespoon
  • Bowls
  • Strainer
  • Containers with lids

Step1
Place 3 to 5 tbsp. of linseed oil into a bowl.
Step2
Choose a color and add the pigment, a little at a time, until a doughy paste begins to form. Mix well with a spatula.
Step3
Add powdered pigment until you obtain the depth of color that you desire. Mix thoroughly to develop the color well.
Step4
Add oil, a little at a time, until the doughy mixture becomes smooth and creamy. Continue mixing.
Step5
Add solvent slowly and gradually until you obtain the proper consistency. Pour the mixture through a strainer to remove any lumps that may remain. Place the prepared paint in a clean, dry container with a secure lid. Repeat this process for the other colored pigments using a new wooden spatula and bowl.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be careful as you add each component to the mixture. Too much or too little of any ingredient can yield unfavorable results. Oil can soak up different pigments to varying degrees, so precise measurements are not possible. However, going slowly will produce an excellent quality of natural oil paint.
  • Use only raw linseed oil or linseed stand oil. Never use boiled linseed oil which can be hazardous to your health.
